Community event raises awareness for World Parkinson’s Disease Day
To mark World Parkinson’s Day this year, The SESLHD Movement Disorders Service held a community education and support event for those with lived experience with Parkinson’s Disease.
Parkinson’s Disease is the fastest growing neurological condition worldwide. Currently, there is no cure. There are 219,000 people living with the disease in Australia today. By 2040, it is predicted that 12million people will have this diagnosis, worldwide. No person with the disease will have the same symptoms as another.
Over 40 participants attended the event. Topics included disease treatment and management, and drug treatment options. The importance of Allied Health Services in the Parkinson’s journey was stressed, promoting exercise and an active life and practical strategies for optimising independence. Information was provided on local resources including the Wellbeing Program at Calvary Hospital and support services including Parkinson’s Disease NSW.
People with Parkinson’s Disease can, and should, live a life that is rich and fulfilling. While Parkinsons is a movement disorder, there are invisible non-motor symptoms that accompany the motor symptoms. Sometimes, these can be more debilitating and isolating than the visible signs and symptoms.
The event educated and empowered people, reminding them that they’re not alone and they can live well with the disease, supported by specialised services and health professionals who can provide tailored intervention. The session was also an opportunity to provide networks for disease management, connection and support.
Attendees shared their experience with the group. Some quotes from the day:
“The knowledge we took away, along with the thoughtful discussions, was incredibly insightful and meaningful. We left with fresh ideas, valuable connections, and a genuine sense of inspiration. It was a pleasure to share that experience with such a curious and thoughtful group of individuals.”
“The presenters did a fantastic job creating an open and engaging atmosphere that made the session so impactful. The event sparked ideas and reflections that will stay with us.”
